Ricardo
Ricardo (Ricardo Antonino Martínez Ortega) was born in Santiago de Chile 15 April 1956. Son of Spanish parents (Palencia). In May 1969 he emigrated with all his family to Madrid. He started his professional life at the end of the seventies illustrating for various publications, advertising agencies, and comic books, including a series entitled "El tío Óscar”, for Piñón magazine. In 1981 he moved to Miami, USA where he worked firstly at Miami News, as a graphic designer/ illustrator and after to The Miami Herald, exclusively as an illustrator.
With Nacho (José Ignacio Moreno Cuñat) he published from 1987 the comic books "Goomer", first in El País and from 1990 in El Mundo. In 1989 he returned to Madrid to be part of El Mundo foundational team as assistant manager of illustration. In this newspaper he organised the illustration and graphics department. In May of 1990 he started publishing political jokes along with Nacho. He combined this job with illustrating the Director’s article and "Goomer" pages.
Nacho stopped writing political jokes in February of 2002. Since then, Ricardo ha produced them alone. Awards: Many prizes (between them 8 golds and a Special Mention of jury) of SND Society of Newspaper Design, for the illustrations and page designs published in El Mundo and The Miami Herald. Graphic Humour Award, International Press Award, Premio Tono de la Comunidad de Madrid, Premio Haxtur de Humor Gráfico del Festival de Gijón. His works have appeared in the Society of Illustrators of New York annual collections.
